“The bike is a language,” says Carlos Hernández, cofounder of Coyote Aventuras, a travel and bike outfitter in Oaxaca, Mexico. “It’s amazing how these sports can help you connect with other people, cultures, places, and also with your emotions. With your own mind, your own heart.”
Hernández was part of a crew that gathered together in the mountain bike mecca of Oaxaca to build a new flow trail for a growing community of mountain bikers. Their project is captured in the short film, “Build With Purpose,” which showcases what happens when a community of people get behind a singular purpose. In the film, you’ll hear from Hernández, as well as trail advocate and Kona Bikes ambassador Israel Carrillo and Flylow athlete Cody Wilkins, director and lead builder for Sensus RAD Trails.
The crew built the trail in five days, working together with forest managers and local builders. “We’re able to work with people who live in this community and have managed this forest for generations,” says Wilkins. “One of the things I like to do is come in and pass the torch to that next generation of builders.”
As the bike culture in Mexico is growing, there’s a need for new, more modern trails. “They are asking for bigger features, more technical features,” adds Carrillo. “If they’re able to watch the bike scene outside of Mexico, they’re asking the bike community to grow into that.”
Carrillo knows that when you’re creating something for the greater good, it’s more enjoyable. “Whenever I’m cooking a dish, I can tell it tastes better when I’m sharing it. It’s the same here,” he says in the film. “If I’m trail building for myself, that’s cool, but what’s the purpose? We need to share it. When you’re sharing something, it tastes better."
