Not one to sit on the sidelines, former Olympic ski racer Megan McJames is back with a new short film about her next Olympic sized challenge: parenthood.
You may remember Megan McJames as the athlete who supported her own Olympic bid twice after getting dropped by the U.S. Ski Team back in 2012. McJames qualified for the 2014 and 2018 Winter Olympic Games as an independent ski racer, the first of her kind. She took on the Olympics on her own terms. Lately, McJames has been busy raising two young daughters, and her newest short film, “Trails Still Blazing,” documents what it takes to balance life, family, and the sport she still loves.
Directed by Iz La Motte, “Trails Still Blazing,” which was supported by Flylow, appeared in the Girl Winter film tour this past fall and debuts online this month.
“Motherhood pushes you beyond what you thought your limit was,” McJames says in the film. “Even for someone who climbs mountains, and does hard things, and is an Olympian, there’s a new level of strength that comes out.”
The film showcases McJames teaching her young daughter to ski at Alta, Utah, and later going for a backcountry tour with a friend—both uniquely rewarding in their own ways. “I fell in love with skiing at a very young age and that love for the sport is what has fueled me through my whole life,” she says. “It’s somewhere you can go for fun and adventure and also for quiet and recentering.”
