Win the grand prize and you ll get a free flight to Jackson from anywhere in the U.S. (yep, you heard right, Flylow s buying you a coach seat and a bag or peanuts on your way to Jackson Hole!), free lodging for the duration of the course, and your choice of an Avalanche Level 1 or Level 2 course taught by some of the best instructors in the mountains. Our Avalanche Level 1 courses focus on getting you educated about the snow conditions and weather patterns and finding yourself some reliable and educated teammates, says Marilynn Davis, co-owner and lead instructor at Jackson Hole Outdoor Leadership Institute. The classes will ask to you consider the terrain you want to enter. Is it avalanche terrain? What has the snow and weather done to that area? You ll also learn how to have an emergency plan in case things go wrong. Our classes teach the idea of contingency plans, having the right equipment, working as a team, being observant when you are reading avy reports or are out there in the mountains, and choosing terrain wisely and traveling wisely, adds Davis. In short, most things you need to plan and prepare, you can learn in an AIARE Level 1 course. Education is the answer. Winner will be selected November 30th, so check back here on Dec 1.
