Our New Winter Gear Is Out—And We’re Pretty Darn Excited

Introducing Flylow’s fall 2024 lineup, with our first kids’ outerwear, down and flannel pieces you’ll never want to take off, no more forever chemicals, and a new sizing system that’s meant to accommodate everyone.

The truth is, I never stop thinking about skiing. Don’t get me wrong: I love summer, too. But when fall temperatures drop and the snow starts falling at high elevations, I start dreaming about powder turns. At Flylow, fall is exciting for another reason, too: It’s the time of year when we roll out our new winter collection. Sure, there are nerves—is that new jacket we made going to be well received? But mostly, it’s pride and excitement that the products we created are of the highest quality and designed with purpose and intention. We can’t wait for you to check them out.

Our new fall 2024 collection has a little something for everyone, from new fall flannels to wearable down insulation to the most stormproof shells and bibs we’ve ever designed to our first collection of kids’ outerwear, which my kids are just as excited about as I am.

Our Gear is More Waterproof Than Ever

I recently talked to Jonathan Ellsworth at Blister Gear Review about burritos and PFAS (you can listen to the interview here) and we ran through some of my favorite pieces. Some of my favorite products in the fall line aren’t new—it’s the Magnum Pant, made with new Empel DWR, and the always trustworthy Kane Jacket, now updated to 30k/30k waterproofing.

We are so proud to have our first 100 percent PFAS-free collection for winter. When we set out to eliminate PFAS forever chemicals from our entire collection, we knew we didn’t want to compromise quality. A jacket that falls apart or wets out in a storm isn’t doing any favors for you or the environment. This led us to innovate and find new solutions.

With Empel DWR, we found the best of both worlds. It’s 10 times more waterproof than comparable DWRs and it’s Oeko-Tex certified to be PFA/PFC free. It’s applied with less water usage and it’s solvent free in the process. This year, you’ll find Empel DWR on our top-of-the-line pieces like the Iceman Coat, Kane Jacket, Smythe Bib, Malone Jacket, Stash Bib, Magnum Pant, Domino Jacket, and Siren Bib. So, go ahead and ski in the rain. We’ve got you covered.

We Revamped Our Down Insulation

If you’ve been a fan of our women’s Betty Down in the past, wait until you put on our newest Betty Down. It’s both warmer and more packable. It has more loft and we added underarm vents for more versatile usage. Basically, it’s your old favorite down hoody—now with a modern makeover. We did the same thing to the Larry Vest, a retro-inspired down vest that’s warmer but also lighter. And we introduced the new women’s Truckee Down Parka a long, 600-fill down coat that’s like your around-town version of the Betty Down. Wear it walking the dog on a cold morning or out to dinner. And of course, the down we use is sustainably sourced, PFAS free, and certified by the Responsible Down Standard.

More Sizing Options for Women’s Pants

At Flylow, we used to mark our women’s ski pants with what’s called alpha sizing. That means you’d pick from a range of bibs or pants with labels like small, medium, or large. But that often left people in between sizes. And since we couldn’t make a marge or a smedium (though those do have a nice ring, no?), we decided to change our system. This year, for our women’s pants, we wanted to give you even more options. So, we’re switching to what’s known as numeric sizing. That means your favorite Foxy Bibs, Moxie Bibs, Daisy Pants, and more come in even more sizing options. We went from having five sizes (XS-XL) to having eight core sizes (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14) and two extended sizes, plus short and tall lengths. The benefit of numeric sizing is you get a more specific size to fit you and we’ll offer a broader array of sizes so everybody can find the pair of ski pants that works best for them. Be sure to check out the size charts on each product page to figure out the right option for you.

New Fall Flannels

Last year, we introduced the women’s May Flannel, a fleece-lined button up, and it was an instant hit. The guys in our office wanted a version of their own. So, we added the new Lassen Fleece Lined Flannel to the lineup this year. It’s warm, breathable, and has hand pockets and snaps up the front. It’s super versatile, it’ll go from being your favorite around-town, wood-chopping layer to a midlayer under your ski shell.

We’ve also been enamored by wool after launching our successful wool base layers a few years back. We wanted to bring the odor-fighting, temperature regulating qualities of wool to a classic Flylow flannel. Enter the Porter Flannel, a wool blended shirt that has the right balance of poly and wool to keep it soft and durable while getting you all of the great features wool has to offer. It is our warmest flannel for life and skiing.

Flylow’s First Kids’ Outerwear Is Here

Flylow Kids Outerwear

This year is special to me as we are launching our first kids’ gear for my kids and yours. We’ve got the Baker Jr. Bibs — a grom sized version of our favorite Baker Bibs—as well as a lightly insulated jacket called the Explorer Jacket, and a full-zip midlayer called the Huck Fleece. As a student of all things gear and a proud parent, I have spent the last 10 years exploring kids’ gear and I truly believe Flylow is making better products for kids.

The idea was to give younger skiers and riders all the features they need: pockets big enough to store a snack, a hood that can actually fit over a helmet, and enough insulation to keep them warm (but not so much that they overheat). For grownups, we made sure the kids’ gear has gaskets and size adjustments that are functional and easy to use so gear grows with the kid and that everything is durable and waterproof to last through a few hand-me-downs.

We had kids of all ages and sizes to chime in and test the gear hard and let us know what worked and what didn’t. My son wore the prototype Baker Jr. Bibs for over 150 days straight—he wore them five days a week to second grade (you need snow gear to play at recess where I live) and every weekend skiing. Kids, it turns out, are motivated product testers. We just had to keep bags of gummy bears and endless cups of hot chocolate at the ready.

That’s it for now. From our home to yours, welcome to Flylow’s latest winter collection. Let it snow! We’ll see you out there.
