Why We’re Switching to Numeric Sizing on Women’s Pants

Why We’re Switching to Numeric Sizing on Women’s Pants

This just in: We’re getting rid of sizes like XS through XL to offer even more sizes for women.

As a small company, we take a risk every time we place an order with our factories for new gear. Order too much and we end up with excess inventory that we can’t sell. Order too little and we leave our customers hanging without enough colors or sizes to accommodate everyone. It’s a difficult balance.

When it comes to our women’s gear, we’ve always had the same motto: Make what works and make it well. We’ve never compromised on performance, fabrics, or quality across our entire production line. And we’ve always worked hard to ensure we have just as many options in styles between our men’s line and our women’s collection. But fit and sizing has always been tricky. How do you make a line of clothes that’s going to work on every body type out there? We have field and fit tested our women’s gear extensively and even still, we’d hear from women who couldn’t quite find a size or style that worked for them. We knew we had to do something about that.

Traditionally, we’ve offered our women’s ski pants in a range of sizes from extra small to extra large, with long, standard, and short lengths. That’s called alpha sizing. That covered most people but not everyone. Because many of you are in-between sizes. You’re between a small and a medium. Or between a large and an extra large. The answer? Numeric sizing. That means instead of using broad labels like small or large, we use more specific numbers, ranging from a zero to a 14. This means not only can we offer a wider range of sizes, but our sizes can be more accurate. Numeric sizing creates better fitting garments and more choices for you. (And hopefully less returns for all of us.) Win win, no?

So, starting this fall, if you’re purchasing women’s pants or bibs from Flylow, you may notice a new sizing system. Perhaps you know your jean size already, but be sure to check out our sizing fit guide on each product page to make sure you’re getting the best size for you. We’re here to help if you need us.
